Emerging Leader Development

“New managers need to see the differences between individual contributor and manager and their new agenda-setting and network-building responsibilities. In so doing, the new managers can gain some insight into the differences between being primarily responsible for people as opposed to task.” (Linda Hill, 1992)

Emerging leaders are new supervisors, management trainees, and project team leaders. They are emerging because it is often their first brush at getting results through others. Many of the skills that will be required of them are completely new. They need to have opportunities to learn new skills, practise those skills, make mistakes, and receive feedback and coaching.

Our program for Emerging Leaders provides the new leader with coaching and support while they learn many new leadership behaviours. As a result their Developmental Plan needs to focus on:

  • Planning and thinking from a long-term perspective
  • Gaining comfort leading others
  • Getting results through others
  • Increasing exposure to senior management
  • Establishing goals for career and current job

A JLS Coach provides support to the Emerging Leader by holding them accountable to the goals that they set for their development, and by de-briefing some of the new leadership experiences that they encounter. Some of the greatest leaders have asked themselves at this stage: Do I want to be a leader? Having an experienced leadership coach who will listen, and help them deal with these issues in a sensitive way, is paramount to their future growth.
